Slice of Improv LOVE & FUN!

LOVE of Teaching...LOVE of Improvisational Piecing
I absolutely LOVE teaching quilters new techniques and tricks to add into their quilters tool box.  I especially LOVE it when quilters venture outside of their comfort zone, take risks and try something NEW!!  And that is precisely why I LOVE teaching my Slice of Improv workshop!!  Yesterday, I had the delightful pleasure of sharing my LOVE of improvisational piecing with the fabulous Peninsula Quilters Guild and celebrating their progression over the course of our 6 hours together.

During the first round of piecing blocks, there were a few moments of panic as one quilter or another feared they had made a mistake.  One of the best aspects of improvisational design is there is NO such thing as a mistake!!  There are only "design opportunities" and more than one path to explore!!  In less than an hour...I started to see some interesting correlations:

  • exciting collections of block designs were starting to emerge
  • shoulders started to relax
  • curiousity started to set in with a sense of wonder and excitement
  • and lots of smiling all around the room!!

Here are some snapshots from these adventurous quilters and their lovely works of art in progress!!

By the end of class, everyone had pieced a fun assortment of block designs.  Several quilters brought their blocks up to the front where we experimented with different layout possibilities:  grids, colorwash/gradations, chinese coins, alternating pieced blocks with solid fabric and more!!
