Yesterday, Doug and I drove up to Sacramento to visit the California State Fair. First stop was the CA Craft Display where I had three quilts on display (left to right):
We visited the various exhibits on display throughout the fairgrounds including...
There were quite a few exhibits featuring California Wildlife: bald eagles, river otters, raccoons, etc. While each of the exhibits provided some space for the animals to retreat away from the crowds along with some enrichment activities, I always worry about the animals' stress levels. So instead of photographing the actual wildlife, I opted to snap pictures of the Wildlife Art located all around the fairgrounds: fabricated jellyfish, giant golden bears, carved bears and Woodsy Owl to which I proudly recited: Give a Hoot! Don't Pollute!
Speaking of CA celebrities, we visited all six stations of Camp Smokey. There we learned about fire safey, prevention and how an orphaned bear survived a forest fire and went on to be known as Smokey the Bear. Once we completed our Camp Smokey Passport, we earned a Smokey the Bear bandana. I love how they turned Smokey the Bear into a mandala design!
After a couple of hours walking around in the hot Sacramento summer heat, we decided to cool off and satisfy our curiosity by checking out what exactly is a Silent Disco? Once inside, we saw all the makings of a dance party: 3 DJs spinning tunes, large scale decorations, a disco ball, lots of bright flashing lights, and a large crowd dancing away...and yet no music to be heard! In fact, the room was eerily quiet. Instead, everyone was listening to one of three stations on their head phones, with each station featuring one of the live DJs playing a different genre of dance music: 80s, classic rock and pop.
Of course, we completed our Fair Fun with some celebratory fried dough, aka Funnel Cakes, as they are called here in California. Good thing we walked 11K steps!
