Local Fiber Art Field Trip: Montalvo Arts Center

Array of Art on the Grounds at Montalvo Arts Center, Saratoga, CA

Studio Art Quilt Associations offers an impressive array of programs for its members on an International level (ie. Annual Conference, Webinars, Newsletter, Mentorship program, Exhibition opportunities, etc), Regional Level (our NorCal/NV region has quarterly meetings complete with speakers, field trips, show & tell, and networking), and now at the Local level through the development of Local Connections.  Our Local Connections, comprised of Bay Area artists, gathered last week to visit the Threads: Weaving Humanity exhibit of Fiber Art on display at the Montalvo Arts Center.  This was my first visit to the Montalvo Arts Center and we had an absolutely glorious weather to explore all the various Art on the Grounds.

Caravan, by Hellen Ascoli was the first Fiber Art display we discovered.  Hellen built 7 wooden structures that she combined with hand-woven fabrics and plants.

Next up was RoCoCo's Forgiveness, The Misplaced Grace.  RoCoCo layered fiber and materials into a tower that occupies a pedastal that originally held a statue referencing a season. RoCoCo presented at the SAQA Annual Conference and spoke about their collaboration process, as well as how they create in response to their surroundings.  I enjoyed the opportunity of viewing their latest collaboration interacting with the architectural and natural elements.

As soon as I spotted Sudnya Shroff's A Common Thread up over the hill, I found myself walking faster to enter this rainbow wonderland.  Walking in and around these yarn rainbows brought me such joy and delight, and I couldn't resist taking photographs from nearly every angle!!

The ground is covered with crocheted flowers that are in full bloom and grow alongside real flowers!

As you can see, I was quite smitten with this display, and loved seeing how the yarn brilliantly interacted with the natural surroundings: trees, falling leaves, and rays of sunlight.

Montalvo Arts Center is hosting The Mending Project, an interactive exhibit combining thread, color, and mending.  Attendees are invited to bring in garments and textiles  in need of mending and/or embellishment.  The mended pieces remain on display for the duration of the exhibit, with strands of threads connected to the large spools of thread mounted on the walls.  It was fascinating to see the little details added to each of the garments/textiles, including a few stuffed animals.

Special thanks to our host extraordinaire, Maureen L, for organizing this fun gathering and even providing little booklets with an overview of the various fiber art on display.  Maureen didn't have any staples, so she stitched the booklets together on her sewing machine!!  Yes--she is just that amazing!!

If you will be in the Saratoga, CA area (suburb of San Jose), I highly recommend visiting the Montalvo Arts Center.
