February Teaching Adventures

The 2nd week of February was a whirlwind teaching tour which included 2 lectures and 2 workshops for three different organizations.

First up was my Challenge Yourself! lecture/trunk show for the Surfisde Quilters Guild in San Clemente, CA. The meeting venue was lovely with a gorgeous view overlooking San Clemente, but what really impressed me was the live piano music played by three of their members.  These musical performances really enhanced the pre-meeting atmosphere!

They presented me with a Surfside Quilters Guild pin (very colorful and fun design), as well as an emergency kit (look at how much stuff they packed into this mesh zipper pouch.  Thankfully I did not need anything on this trip but will be carrying it on future trips.  In the evenings, I had a chance to explore the San Clemente area with a walking tour to explore the restaurant and shopping scene. Both nights, I couldn't resist popping into the Paradis ice cream shop for a little dessert to take back to my hotel room!

I also kept en eye out for design inspiration in and around San Clemente: scrollwork on gates, clamshell architectural details, carpet and wall paper designs, as well as tilework stairs.

Their regular workshop venue was unavailable so the guild president hosted the Wednesday Mod Mandalas workshop in her home (complete with some tasty treats to fuel our creative energy).

Check out their spectacular in-progress Mod Mandalas!!

Of course, I also discovered some fun design inspiration as I navigated the San Jose (SJC) and John Wayne (SNA) Airports.

Including this fabulous "The Art of Opera" exhibit directly across from my departure gate! It featured artwork designs used in the sets and costumes of Bizet's Production of The Pearl Fishers.

Once back at home, I quickly unpacked that evening and packed for my Free Motion CREA-TV and Reality lecture scheduled the next evening with the Alameda Quilt Guild. Wanting to leave early to avoid Oakland rush hour traffic, I decided to explore the Oakland Museum of CA. This museum has three floors of exhibits including California Art, History, and Natural Sciences. There are several outdoor installations along the grounds, including Tony Labet's Big Peace IV.

The big draw for me was seeing the No Spectators: The Art of Burning Man exhibit before it closed! What a fun and colorful celebration of the annual Burning Man festival.  Below are just a few of my favorites from this exhibit (top left clockwise):
  • Shrumen Lumen by Foldhaus Art Collective
  • Trocto by HYBYCOZO (Yelena Filipchuk and Serge Beaulieu)
  • Tin Pan Dragon by Duane Flatmo
  • Ten Principles DOT Specification Street Sign by Scott Froschauer

Afterwards, I met up with the Alameda Quilt Guild, for dinner and set up for the meeting. I was delighted to see the debut of their newly quilted guild banner featuring blocks made by members. I got a kick out of the signage on their giveaway table aka Kiss-It Goodbye Table.

On Saturday, I taught Pebble & Play! for Bay Quilts! I confess that I was so taken with everyone's stitching progress that I totally forgot about taking pictures during the workshop!!

Thanks for a fun-filled week of teaching
