While the Coronavirus, aka Covid-19, has caused several cancellations in my teaching schedule, it has opened up the opportunity to participate in SAQA's Annual Conference which is going virtual! Instead of canceling the Toronto Conference in light of the growing concerns over the spread of Covid-19, SAQA took a proactive step in converting the conference into an online experience. Now, SAQA members everywhere can attend via the Zoom videoconferencing platform, and participate in the schedule of amazing speakers and panelists, starting 7 pm EDT on Thursday, March 19th through 7 PM EDT on Saturday, March 21st!!
There is still time to register for the Virtual Conference (just $200). Not only will your registration fee provide you access to this amazing line up (with the options for watching the live presentations and/or watch the recordings through June 30th, 2020), plus you will help SAQA raise the funds needed to help offset losses from canceling the in-person conference.
Another way you can support SAQA is through the Spotlight Auction which will also go virtual this year! This is an annual fundraising event where donated Fiber Artwork is sold through a silent auction. Moving to a virtual silent auction means that EVERYONE can participate, including non-SAQA members! The auction will open for bidding on Thursday, March 19th at 7 PM EDT...so you have a few days to take a sneak peek of all 265 stunning pieces of auction artwork!! Start a running list of all the amazing Fiber Art you would like to place a bid to win and be sure to bid early and often! Each table has a different ending time, so be sure to note the table and closing time, so you don't miss out on bidding for a coveted piece or two or more!!
This is my first year creating a piece for the Spotlight Auction. I started with a wholecloth quilted design that was transformed with some cutwork reveals to expose the holographic plastic film hidden underneath the surface, and some embellished markings. Below is the progression from start to finish...
Fractured
Once whole and complete,
The surface crisp and neat.
Under stress, tiny fissures appear.
The ability to mend is uncertain and unclear.
As tensions mount and surge…
May hope and beauty reemerge.
It is Auction Item #279, and will be part of Table #7 that closes on Saturday, March 21st at 8:30 PM EDT.
