I live in a big house and actually have the use of two rooms but don't use them because they are cold and dark and it's winter here. In our next house (smaller (I want everything in one room and easily stored and found and tidied.

ReplyDeleteI love my studio space for the convenience (right outside my bedroom door), the light brought by 2 large windows, and the heritage (inherited my grandmother's sewing machine and sewing tools). I just wish knew how to better organize everything!!!

ReplyDeleteWe are temporarily living outside our home that is being remodeled (yes, a new quilt studio will be included!). As a result my quilting space is crowded into a small bedroom. It's very tight in there, as I have two large tables holding my Bernina and my George. They are back-to-back in the center of the room with walking space betwwen them and the walls. A very tight fit!

My space is tucked away in the basement where it's cool in summer and can be warmed up easily in winter. Someone in my family recently decided to "help" me organize by emptying out half the room, leaving me with no idea where most of my things are! I'd say this book comes at exactly the right time!

ReplyDeleteI love my ironing station, a big board on top of 2 banks of drawers, made exactly the depth I wanted them. It’s tall enough to use as a work station, especially when I’m fusing on pictorial quilts.
ReplyDeleteThis is perfect timing for this blog tour because I'm in the process of reorganizing my creative space. My space is the second bedroom in our townhouse, so there are some limitations (no room for a design wall). I also have my cutting table set up in front of a hutch that holds art journaling supplies - because of space limitations. I spent the past week wrapping all of my yardage stash on comic boards, and what a difference that made - tidied up and gave me some additional space. I'm currently going through miscellaneous size scraps and cutting them into useable sizes which will be stored in clear plastic containers by size. I've done other smaller reorganizing projects making my space better and easier to use over the past few months. Even a small project can make a big difference.

I don't actually love my studio space as it is. That is why I want to win the book. I am seriously considering a major overhaul of my studio. It has been a make do space for way too many years now. Having said that I do love that it is close to the living room and therefore my family!

ReplyDeleteMy husband & I are now retired & living in N. California now. My quilt room is the second largest room in our home, with 4 Billy cabinets on one wall and our old kitchen cabinets from our previous home are on the other side (upper & lower w/a countertop between), painted to match the Billy cabinets. I have quilted over 40 yrs so you can imagine the amount of fabric and scraps! I need all the help I can get organizing this to make it more comfortable for us as we get older. ReplyDeleteI am lucky to have a whole room for all my fabric and quilting tools. But stuff quickly grows to fill space, so I need to stay on top of organizing and managing it all. I LOVE all the fabric I can have ready at hand to see, touch, pull and plan with. But I need to better organize all the other stuff -- rulers, templates, papers, patterns, books, marking tools, cutting tools, needles, thread, pins, needles and clips, etc, etc. The combination of the colors I choose and the projects I gravitate towards are what makes my space unique to me -- and each crafter's space to themselves.

ReplyDeleteI like that during my past 15 weeks at home while I have been out-of-a-job, I have been able to finally get my sewing room almost totally organized. Also I was able to sell many things that I no longer wanted or needed for some extra money.

ReplyDeleteI'm lucky enough to have 2 adjoining sewing rooms! One wall of books, one wall for fabric. These control most of the chaos, but there are containers of "stuff" throughout the entire house!

ReplyDeleteMy sewing space is the bonus room over the garage. Lots of light and little nooks/wings each with a window. Each one has a designated use; sewing/ironing, cutting & storage underneath and the last for relaxinging/hand sewing & books. Lovely yellow walls make it my happy place. There are areas that I need to rethink so I am looking forward to reading Lilo's book and getting ideas.
ReplyDeleteI like that I have a big window which looks out to my crape myrtles and oak trees (2nd floor so I see the flowers in the crape myrtles and resurrection fern in the oak tree). Uniqueness? It is half of a room, the only real wall is only about 5 feet high because the ceiling (roof) angles down to it and for my little closet which is on that wall, I step down six inches but still have to bend to access it and be in it - but I still love it because it's my space.
ReplyDeleteI love that my cats sit with me in my sewing room :-) It has good light from windows and dedicated desks and drawers for all my sewing supply. I have a huge cutting table ....that is too big and too heavy but certainly useful for laying fabric out for cutting.
ReplyDeletethe best thing about my space is i finally can keep my machine up 24/7 and all my quilty doo-dads are within an arm's reach....can sew for 5 min or 2 hours at the drop of a hat....it's my favorite roommate...lol!
ReplyDeleteMy sewing room is a small bedroom. I have 2 work stations set up so I can have friends come over for a sewing day. Giving up this space is well worth it!
ReplyDeleteI have an upstairs bedroom I use as creative space. I love the fact that it has a window to look out at the backyard. But it is cluttered and messy because everything that is in it doesn't have a home, and lots of things get moved around every time I work on a project.
ReplyDeleteWhen we moved into this house, we reworked the floor plan to combine 2 rooms not one studio space for me. We also had a closet made for storage that span the entire width of the room, incorporating old upper and lower kitchen cabinetry. The only real drawback - its in the basement with very little natural light.

ReplyDeleteI have a space that encompasses half of our family room but it is hard to organize because it is shared with other things. I love the big windows I can look out to watch the neighborhood and I love my cutting counter which is a former wet bar from the previous owner. It is the perfect height and size to fit a 24" 36" mat on and have a little room on the side for stuff. There is the sink which is mostly a big hole that gathers dust. :-) I also like the glass cupboards and other cupboards to store fabric in but they are counter depth which is a bit narrow so folding fabric to fit is a trick to be mastered. :-) I am a messy sewer and tend to keep going rather than clean up so organizing things is something I want to get better at! K-
ReplyDeleteI have taken over two bedrooms in our house. This happened when I got a longarm machine. To reduce the amount of back and forth between the two rooms, I've step up two ironing and cutting stations. I'm constantly looking for better ways to store all my stuff to make better use of the space.

ReplyDeleteI do love my space...just need a little help with organization. It is painted yellow because I'm in the basement and I love the sun and outdoors...so this helps me keep happy. I love having things surround me that makes me happy, family pics, meaningful things grandkids made, things my mom and dad had, oh so many things...but wondering if I need to thin those out a bit to make way for sewing stuff...so hard to give them up.

ReplyDeleteWhat I love most is that I know that I can tackle any project I desire in it. I have space and tools to tackle everything I like to do and have a pretty good handle on where everything is. The challenge is to keep it clear enough for actually working in it!
ReplyDeleteI live alone (with a cat!) in a small home in a rural hamlet. My "official" studio is the largest of the 3 bedrooms in the house; the guest room (tiniest) has a twin bed that serves as a design "wall" when the one in my studio is otherwise occupied! I've concentrated on fabric storage in my "official" studio -- but there's also yarn, books and embroidery supplies, and the yarn, roving and needle-felting materials have spread into the living room as well. I have a "messy" back room for dye and paint suppies, and it needs more help re: storage than the rest of the house, but for now I am making do!

Probably the best thing about my space is the shelving that I store my fabric on. However, I share the space with my husband (who does a bit of quilting) and it seems he can not stand an empty flat space. We added a table over a year ago and the only time I have used it, I had to work to get a corner for what I needed to do. He also stacks stuff in front of the shelves to the point where some shelves can not be accessed at all. Help!!!
ReplyDeleteI love that I am blessed to have space that I can call my own (although I do share it with the cat who has her own ideas about who owns the space)! I love that I have painted it a cheerful lime green and white! I love the big window with a view of the woods! The space is small with sloped ceilings so those are my biggest challenges. I could use help with better organization and time management.

ReplyDeleteI have recently split my sewing spaces to 1. longarm and 2. piecing and sewing. They are on different floors and I find myself constantly going up and down looking for a tool or fabric! I need this book! LOL
ReplyDeleteI have two sewing rooms, one with a door I can close if I want uninterrupted sewing time, and a former formal dining room open to the living room if I want to be near the hubby while sewing. I like to keep four machines set up for different projects so I can just start sewing. The biggest problem is notions all over and remembering just where they are! The book by Lilo looks like it could help!
ReplyDeleteMy sewing room takes up most of my living space. I live in a converted garage and am thankful to be near my son and family. It is getting to the time for a complete cleaning and re-do, am excited to read this book.
ReplyDeleteI have a large "sewing room" that has become a "catch-all room" for anything not wanted somewhere else. I have reached the point that I want to re-evaluate and reorganize it. A copy of this book would be greatly needed and appreciated.
ReplyDeleteI love the view looking outside from my studio space, but the view inside is disorganized and cluttered. There are too many things that I am attached to in the space and I need to downsize to make the inside of the space as joyful.

ReplyDeleteEvery flat surface becomes a clutter magnet. I wish I knew how to keep my many ongoing projects in visual site but neat and not using space I need for cutting, pressing, etc. I have some in plastic storage boxes, but I can't visually tell what's in the boxes - they have no room on the front to label them (they're those Art Bin boxes).
ReplyDeleteMy sewing room is actually a storage room in our garage. I know that sounds odd (ghastly?) but being outside of the main house actually has its advantages. It is quiet and there are less distractions. And for some reason, no one in my family thinks to look for me out there. That being said, if we ever move my first priority will be for a proper sewing room with heating and air conditioning!
ReplyDeleteAfter 5 years of being retired from teaching and getting back into sewing/quilting, I finally turned my unused dining room into a studio. Now, I don't have to haul all my tools out including my sewing machines every time I sew/quilt. Yahoo! However, I do still have to store most of my fabrics in the garage in covered tubs. There isn't room for that in my small dining room. Any tips on organization and maximizing space would be great!
ReplyDeleteI have a corner of the kitchen as my sewing area. I bought a large, oak desk at Goodwill for $9, and placed it next to a large window looking into the backyard. I also have a TV for noise, and am close to whatever I am cooking for the family.
ReplyDeleteI love my windows to look out and my glass front fabric storage cabinet, and my mini quilts hanging around the room. I don’t like having to uncover my cutting table or ironing surface in order to use them...piles get shifted from one to another! I need help with organizing better.

ReplyDeleteCurrently, my space is in our living room, rendering it useless for anything else unless I clear out and put everything away somewhere. We built on a sewing/sun room for (mostly) my use. It's closed in, heated/cooled, wired, etc, but not finished. I have used it to set up my quilt frame and lay things out on the floor. Soon I will need to make some decisions about finishing and setting it up permanently. I surely could use some help from this book!!

I don't really think my space is particularly unique...it is a spare bedroom and I know that others have the same. I'm always looking for organizational ideas to make the space more useable.

My cutting and pressing stations are close at hand, however, my stash runneth over! I need help in the organizaton of that and decorating! I do believe this book would be very helpful!

ReplyDeleteActually is there anything I like about my sewing room? Only my sewing machine; all else is clutter. The room is small, so I would like it tidier, but out of sight, out of mind becomes more significant as I age. Perhaps Lilo's book could help with this dilemma.

ReplyDeleteMy sewing space was my sons' bedroom. Since they moved out, I moved in. It is still a guest room (occasionally for small grandchildren) so I have to keep that in mind when planning my space.
ReplyDeletebeth d. - I need help with my sewing room. It is small compared to other people's sewing room. I am trying to be more organized with fabric, notions and rulers on my cutting table. My older brother made a ruler holder similar to the one sold on Nancy Notions website and it has been perfect. Still needs some cleaning up of rulers though. I hope to get this book for some organizing tips I could use.
ReplyDeleteI was in the process of organizing my sewing room when I had to stop to make masks, mask covers, and surgical caps. I cleared off just enough space to have room for cutting and sewing. It stresses me out to see the mess growing again, but I'm proud of the work I'm doing, and I know that one day, I'll get back to my organizing project. I look forward to getting some good ideas from this book.
ReplyDeleteWhat I like most about my space is that it is big. Also, I like that I have cupboards with doors for some of my fabric storage. I don't like that I don't have much usable wall space and no wall by my cutting table to hang things.

ReplyDeleteMel, I have a couple of spice jar on lazy susans I think I purchased at Costco years ago that hold 20 jars apiece. They are the perfect container for my beads. They have 2 flip top lids one to pour out beads or the other to shake out a few beads at a time. Love your quilt storage!
ReplyDeleteI love my space because it has my small longarm and beautiful beadboard wood. I also love that it has a design wall (soon to be cleared of a long term project) and a few quilts hanging. I also love my behind the door organization. Plenty to work on with organizing but it is getting there!

ReplyDeleteI live in a small 2 bedroom apartment and my studio space is the second bedroom, which also serves as a computer room and a spare bedroom with a pull out couch/bed. Luckily I have a double (albeit small!) closet that I have filled floor to ceiling with shelves and storage. I'm always searching for new ways to make it work for me. I make fabric landscapes, crazy quilt, knit and crochet and need storage solutions for all the supplies I use.

Hello Mel.... love your work space.... hmmm I suppose the thing that I love the most in my space is that it's so very eclectic. I have an old 5 drawer wooden machinist cabinet that my houses my thread, I love it because my father in law made it a very long time ago and so my threads lay sideways so I can see the colors easily. I have lots of family and inspirational pictures throughout my sewing room that delight me with wonderful memories. My sewing room is also my computer room/ironing room. So sometimes it does have a tendency to become the place where things get stashed! Thanks so much for letting me enter I have lots of odds and ends that need to be organized better... so I don't end up having to move this to reach that!
ReplyDeleteI love having my own space although the other half has taken over the sewing table for his computer and 2 screens to work from home. He hates the clutter but I refuse to clean it up until he is out of there.

ReplyDeleteHave recently downsized from a 5 bedroom home to a 2 bedroom condo. Organizing and down sizing my stash has been challenging. Finding places to donate unwanted items that will use them has also been a challenge.
ReplyDeleteI have move a lot, so I am pretty adept at creating a space to USE.... but I can always use "better" or other ways to help improve what works for me. I do know that too many empty horizontal/flat surfaces creates chaos!!!

ReplyDeleteI have a space that is 17' x 27'. It is beginning to become a usable space. However, I am still having a problem with storing my fabric and my projects to where they are easily accessible. I have finally created a movable design wall and it has help me get projects finished. But I still need help with storage. I believe that this book would help me with that.

ReplyDeleteI am very lucky in that I have 2 areas that are dedicated to my stitching. One is my longarm room, which I used for business for 19 years but need to downsize for retirement. The other is my sewing room with my domestic machine. Somehow, I need to bring the two together.

I made it myself using the bottom half of a 4 ft. wide metal shelving unit on casters--just placed a 28" X 80" sheet of thick plywood on top of it and stapled a layer of cotton batting & a canvas painting tarp over the top. The highest shelf is only 6 inches from the plywood top--this is used to store my large cutting mat, smaller mats & rulers and wool pressing mat. There is enough room on each side to tuck an Ikea cart or a wastebasket, so it utilizes the space well. Since it is on wheels, it can be rolled to one side of the room or the other, depending what I am working on in my quilting studio.

ReplyDeleteWe have moved to AR from TX and I hope to get my sewing room set up soon. I had a room especially designed for sewing. I had a whole 12 foot closet in our Texas home. It had shelves about 12 inches apart and not too deep and sliding doors..
ReplyDeleteI love that I can leave my sewing machine out, however my space needs better arranging. And truth be told I also have a bit in the kitchen a-waiting for me, a lil' table to work on in the living room and I won't even mention where my ironing board resides, so I need help.
ReplyDeleteWe live in a smaller cottage so I continue to dream and wonder, about a "she shed" a network of cubes to organize and store in the back hallway, accessible but out of the room.....
I am moving to a new house soon, and will have a bedroom and large closet dedicated to my quilting hobby. I like having a large enough space to keep a design wall up at all times, as inspiration and incentive to work on projects. I do need some new ideas for fabric storage.
ReplyDeleteI have a small bedroom space for my sewing nook and it seems the fabric is taking over. But I do enjoy having a large window where I have my sewing table. There's nothing better than looking at nature when you need to take a moment. I look forward to learning some better storage techniques for all my "stuff". Thank you!

ReplyDeleteI have a room overlooking my backyard where I can watch the urban wildlife, especially the deer wander through. This is inspiring. I also love my Eddycrest cabinet which is efficient and holds my favorite things as well as places my sewing machine at just the right height for ease of use.
ReplyDeleteI have the two small bedrooms for my studio. A lot of the stuff I use for volunteer projects is taking over the space. I love the cupboards - with doors - that I have for my own stash but the bins for charity fabric are taking over - to the point where I can hardly walk in my sewing studio. Boy, do I need this book
ReplyDeleteI certainly need this book. This is the year I've decided to address my sewing area. I do have a room (that's a plus) but it's tight and could use taller tables and better ways to store fabric and accessories. Too many "make-do" pieces of furniture. I loved seeing yours on your recent video.
ReplyDeleteI have taken over about half of our basement !! We are getting ready for a longarm to join the space. I love my open fabric shelving as I can see the colours. Very inspiring. I also love the new LED shop lights we put up over each task area. Nice and bright when and where you need it. Hubby helped install a pegboard wall in an alcove to hang tools, mats and notions. His aunt's old china hutch houses Christmas fabrics and backings. An antique record cabinet is perfect for my quilting magazines.
ReplyDeleteI have 3/4 of our basement but moved my machine upstairs into my bedroom. Basement just didn't have good lighting, not that I'm getting older and eyes aren't what they were. My longarm is in basement but it does have good lighting over it. My stash closet it over flowing.
ReplyDeleteRight now I have a great space. A bedroom plus a walk in closet the size of the bedroom. We are moving though and potentially I could end up with half of the full basement. Not right away though so I will have the middle sized bedroom in the new house until I decide if it will be worth it to add some things to the basement. This book will be very helpful!

ReplyDeleteI recently moved my sewing space out of a corner of the spare bedroom and into another room. The space is still small and the centre of the floor is fully occupied by my sewing machine cabinet which is full of storage space and opens up to be 2 metres long, and 1.5 metres wide. I love that cabinet! The great thing is too, that when totally closed, there is still space for a camp bed if we need to put someone up.

My husband built me a couple of tables for my sewing space, one for ironing and one for cutting. I have room underneath both to store rollaway drawers for projects and notions. I still need to do some work to get organized, but it's a start.

ReplyDeleteMy space is all over... and not the best layout but it works for me. The best thing about it is that even though all over it's allowed to be my space. Someday I hope to have a real SPACE for my studio.
ReplyDeleteI am lucky to get to mostly use my entire house, but the drawback there is - it is in almost every room, books and sitdown long arm in one, sewing machines and cutting and quilting cotton in another, batting and fleece/flannel/minky in another.
ReplyDeleteI use 2 1/2 bedrooms but feel there would be better ways to utilize my space. The 1/2 br I use is the largest room (and our guest room) but the few from the corner bedroom of Mt. Diablo and my backyard is fantastic, as is the light. Loved seeing your space on the Online Quilt Fest.

ReplyDeleteI have a studio and what my hubby jokingly calls my "annex." The previous owners had the house custom built and in the full walk-out basement, the husband had a craft room where he tied and sold fishing lures. It was a 12' x 15' space with no closets or cabinets. I put the furniture from my old house in it and put all my fabric and supplies on wire shelving units. I lived with it for about two years, thinking through what I really needed/wanted. The most important need was for fabric storage behind doors since the sun through my window was strong and created faded areas in some of my fabric. Along the back wall I now have three wardrobes and shelves, all semi-built in, for fabric, books, AccuQuilt dies, and embroidery thread. The top is a shelf for baskets with WIPs/UFOs and scraps. Rulers are on the wall near my adjustable cutting table. I have a double dresser for fat quarters and other notions. I have a desk area for my notebook, office supplies, and printer. My sewing machine (in a cabinet) faces the window and the view (I live in the mountains). Right outside my studio is a 60" x 30" pressing station on steel shelving, where I can store pressing notions. Then there is my longarm, cabinets and drawers for longarm notions, batting, and threads and 8' x 12' design wall. I've personalized the space with pictures, quilts, and knickknacks. It is my special place.

ReplyDeleteMy sewing spot is one end of the kitchen table; certainly less than ideal. My fabrics and supplies are stored in double door closet that needs more shelves. Oh the list goes on but I need a total plan so i can be more productive with both my sewing and quilting. HELP!
ReplyDeleteMy space is my son's old room which I share with my daughter. She uses it for homework and gaming... I sometimes have to battle with her to use the room but that's life. My major problem is organization. I am working on it little by little:)
ReplyDeleteI really struggle. My space has very little wall space. My sewing table, cutting table, and ironing board are in the middle of the room and not easy to walk around. I actually my design wall in our guest room.
ReplyDeleteI am currently in the process of setting up my sewing room, and I am struggling with what to put where . . . so winning this book would be a huge help!!! As caregiver for my father, my sewing machine has moved in and out of the kitchen where we generally sat until I got tired of moving it and essentially quit quilting. I now have more help and am ready to set up a spare bedroom as my quilting room!
ReplyDeleteI live in a two-story Victorian house, and my quilt room is upstairs...so air conditioning is a must right now! My sewing machine is tucked into a dormer, so I have a window to look out of. There is room for a large cutting table, bookshelf, and a wall of tubs that is my fabric stash! I love it!!!

ReplyDeleteMy Sewing HQ! was a bedroom that now has IKEA Billy bookcases with doors around almost every wall. The exception is the wall with the window which has IKEA pegboards. I am storing over 120 quilting and sewing projects in those bookcases along with tools and notions and my fabric stash. The closet is the area where I think I need the most help, I'd like to have my batting in there and I've got three boxes still with supplies that I want to unpack to not have to move them around the room to access bookshelves.

DeleteI am currently setting up in our living room, since we are retired and our children are grown. We put in new flooring, new window and painted the walls. I love the natural light but I need to put a curtain for when it's too bright. I need to figure out storage and new ironing station.
ReplyDeleteI love my open wire white shelves (I think from the container store) plus big clear plastic bins for fabrics, and my Horn sewing table (the small quilters model), I didn't have much space to work with when I got it. But it's always a mess with multiple projects everywhere.
ReplyDeleteMy sewing space is very small, so it’s a challenge to fit everything in. One wall is the glass partition between my room and the garage! I always have two machines set up (one is a treadle). What I like most about it is the L-shaped table/cabinet my husband made for me with a drop-in for my machine. Thankfully, he’s a carpenter and willing to help me customize my space to be more efficient. Lilo’s book sounds like it may have good ideas for helping me in that endeavor.

ReplyDeleteMy quilting space is the very large second bedroom where I designed a closet filled with drawers and shelves spaced to hold my fabric bins, with floor space for my machines. Batting goes on top shelf with smaller pieces on shelves below. Still working out where I’ll have sewing table. I want it by the window but it gets very hot there. So must do more tweaking. And also need a chair that gives me the proper height that comfortably sew. I use dining rooms on table for cutting.

I love the space I have, but I'm overwhelmed with stuff -- I tend to collect everything I see! I need to declutter to just the things I use regularly and get some good organizational tips. This post has been really helpful!
ReplyDeleteI have a large studio with 3 windows facing north, so there is lots of light without direct sunlight. My problem is that I just cannot get it organized. I have bookcases, metal shelving and a mish-mash of work surfaces, large and small boxes and hanging spaces. I have spent days and weeks trying to get organized, but it is so overwhelming that I never finish the job. I could really use some help!
