100 Days of Mark Making on Fabric: Week 3

What's black and white, and red all over? The next two weeks in my mark-making adventures! Yes, every two weeks a new color will be featured along with continued pops of black and white. So without further ado, here is all the mark-making magic that occurred during Week 3...

15/100: Markers + Artist's Choice

Today's red is a Sakura Identi-Pen marker paired with Jacquard Tee Juice Fine Point black marker. In honor of Valentine's Day, I couldn't resist doodling some red hearts inspired by my love of FMQing.❤️❤️❤️

16/100 (Textile Paints + Circles/Dots)

Everything's awesome when you use LEGO bricks and plates to make marks on fabric!

Three different Jacquard Textile Color paints (True Red, White, and Black) were used as both pure colors as well as mixed to create new colors. At first I dipped the Lego bricks, studs side down to stamp, but it was only a matter of time until I started printing with the undersides featuring the antistud patterning. This made for a playful way to end my day...

17/100 (Dye-Na-Flow + Artist's Choice)

Going with the flow today by using Jacquard's Dye-Na-Flow for faux dyeing. I experimented with pouring Dye-Na-Flow directly onto dry (top row below) vs. dampened fabrics (bottom row below) that were scrunched or pleated. At first I thought I would like the dampened fabrics better as the colors seemed to flow into each other, but I actually like the distinct patterning that was formed on the dried fabric (left column, fabrics 1-3). Which row do you prefer: Top (dry fabrics) or Bottom (dampened fabrics)?!?

Several of the patterns remind me of a Rorschach ink blot test. Several folks commented on Instagram that they saw a scary clown in the top left photo. What imagery do you see?!?

18/100 (Watercolor Crayons/Pencils + Straight Lines)

Short burst of experiments using watercolor blocks, pencils, and crayons. Starburst lines were drawn onto dampened PFD fabric, blended with a wet paintbrush, and air dried before being pressed. You can see the various watercolor products used and finished fabrics below...

Each experiment teaches me more about how much pressure to use when making the marks and how best to blend.

19/100 (Pens + Straight Lines/Grid)

In my happy place doodling straight line designs with red and black Sakura Gelli Roll pens.

20/100 (Artist's Choice + Triangles)

A trio of pens and markers = trying out different triangle designs and textures! (Top to bottom):

21/100 (Pens + Wavy Lines)

Warning: Curved designs ahead using Sakura Gelli Roll pens (classic black and Moonlight Red).

Many of these designs were inspired by motifs that I teach in my Modern Free Motion Fillers & FUN! workshop.

Week 3 brings me up to more than 8.5 yards of mark-making fun since embarking on this project!! Hopefully soon I will start cutting into some of these fabrics and start incorporating into a few Art Quilts.

Follw me on this creative journey as I continue to post my daily creations on Instagram and progress on each Week completed here on my blog.

  1. You are amazing. Rolling the dice creates a limited focus that actually expands your investigations each week. It's very inspiring... as are you.

    1. Absolutely Ann...the dice rolls really simplify my exploration process as I don't have to overthink what to do each day. Just roll, pull those paints/markers, and play!!
