100 Days of Hand-Carved Stamps: Week 8 Update

Week 8 of my 100 Days of Hand Carved Stamp Project generated 7 newly carved stamps which led to some wonderful new designs, discoveries, and printed pages! Read on to learn more about each carved block, its inspiration, and printed patterns...

50/100: Square + Repeat Pattern

"Believe you can and you're halfway there."
-Theodore Roosevelt, 26th president of the United States
Making fireworks to celebrate the midpoint in my 100 days of hand-carved stamps!

Here's a mosaic of the first 50 days of printed pages! And cheers to the next 50 days!

51/100: Circle + Text

”Yoga is the journey of the self, through the self, to the self.”
-The Bhagavad Gita
Today's carved Om stamp was inspired by an incredible afternoon yoga session. Even after taking a couple of days off and feeling absolutely exhausted, I not only managed to touch my foot to my chest which is an awesome achievement on most days. But with a bit of breathing and time, I went on to touch my toes to my chin, then my nose, and incredibly my forehead! Namaste and Om!

Several previously-carved stamps came out to celebrate by creating a trio of radiating mandala designs!

52/100: Leaf + Lines

Spent some time honing my carving gouges using a Slip Strop, then dove into carving a new leafy design.
"Let your light shine. Be a source of strength and courage. Share your wisdom. Radiate love."
-Wilferd Peterson, American Author
I love the radiating lines and textures...

...especially when overlapped with a second color!

53/100: Artist's Choice + Pattern/Repetition

"We are all of us stars, and we deserve to twinkle."
-Marilyn Monroe, American Actress, Model, and Singer
I was excited to play with hexagons as part of my homework for Repeat Patterns-Deep Dive 1 class with Ali Baecker of 3dottedpenguins. Here it is stamped out using the patterns demonstrated by Ali. I was surprised by how easy it was to align the points and/or edges.

While most of my mandalas tend to have 8 repeats, I couldn't resist using my new hexie star as a starting point for a six-sided mandala.

54/100: Circle + Nature

"People are seeing the impact of climate change around them in extraordinary patterns of floods and droughts, wildfires, heatwaves and powerful storms."
-John Holdren, American Scientist/Whitehouse Senior Advisor on Science & Technology
Today's heatwave (96-degrees here in San Jose, CA) inspired a new cactus stamp. Inspiration photo taken during a 2018 visit to Huntington Botanical Desert Gardens.
It was pretty late as I was printing these and I messed up the cacti rotation in the top right print (2nd row/3rd colum). I really did not want to reprint, so I placed the yellow flower off to its side near the other flowers, hoping no one would recognize my oops.

55/100: Square + Artist's Choice

"Own your joy so that you can be happier and bring more energy to the world. That ripple effect works on a quantum level. It brings about changes in the world."
-Gabrielle Bernstein, New York Times Bestselling Author
Creating a variety of ripples with tonight's carved stamp! I especially liked the center print created by staggering each column!

56/100: Artist's Choice + Lines

"Wherever you go, go with all your heart."
-Confucius, Chinese philosopher
Going in lots of different directions with today's triangle stamp and all my heart! As part of my Deep Dive 1 class homework, Ali encouraged us to design a hexagon and triangle block...so here is the second half of the homework assignment. Triangles are really versatile shapes that can be stamped to form lots of new patterns including larger triangles and hexagons...

More hexagons with the orientation of the triangle tip rotated to create these candy stripes...

And rows of triangles and diamonds.

It really is fun to see my prints grow in color, shape, and complexity from week to week! It's also been fun revisiting and combing previously-carved blocks to create mandalas and other fun prints!
