12/8: Energy
"Passion is energy. Feel the power that comes from focusing on what excites you."
-Oprah Winfrey, American talk show host, television producer, actress, author, and philanthropist
It's hard to believe it was less than a year ago when I first started block carving/printing! It's definitely become a passion of mine as I still get excited while exploring all the printing potential of each new block!
These simple blocks were designed to create an atomic model...
...but I couldn't resist playing with printing alternate patterns! I was especially excited by the flower print (top row, middle)
12/9: Thorny
Thistle have to do...
These thorny thistles were a bit tricky to design, carve, and print...but done is better than perfect!
Today's block printing brought back memories of camping/paddling in Algonquin Provincial Park. We ended each night by sharing our "Thistles and Thorns" from the day.
Today's thistle was visiting Fabmo where I filled my bag with all kinds of crafty fun: wallpaper and fabric swatches, beads, wooden blocks, and more! My thorn was finding inspiration and motivation for today's carve/print session.
12/10: Smelly
"Beans, beans, the magical fruit
The more you eat, the more you toot,
The more you toot, the better you feel
So have your beans with every meal!"
I couldn't resist carving some beans for today's Smelly prompt! Today's prints were done on 2" circle labels for use with my mother's canning creations. During my last visit we canned Better Than Bush's Baked Beans and she has several other canned bean recipes in need of canning labels.
Many thanks to Gemma Corroll for all the bean inspiration in her Doodling for Food Lovers book.
I even printed my favorite kind of beans...jellybeans!
12/11: Drifting
“Organic as a dandelion seed, [the ship of our imagination] will carry us to worlds of dreams and worlds of facts”
-Carl Sagan, American astronomer, planetary scientist, astrophysicist, astrobiologist, and author
Two tiny delicate carves,
to close out the night,
dancing and drifting off the page
printed in both black and white.
12/12: Rough
"Between every two pines is a doorway to a new world."|
- John Muir, Scottish-American naturalist, author, environmental philosopher, and early advocate for the preservation of wilderness in the US
'Tis the season for pine trees, pine cones, and pine scent! These blocks were fun to play with different patterns and layouts.
Many thanks to Eloise Renouf, author of 20 Ways to Draw a Tree for the awesome pinecone designs!
12/13: Thoughtful
"Meditation is to be aware of every thought and of every feeling, never to say it is right or wrong, but just to watch it and move with it. In that watching, you begin to understand the whole movement of thought and feeling. And out of this awareness comes silence."
-Jiddu Krishnamurti, Indian Philosopher
Creating mandalas is a fabulous form of meditation and works wonders whenever my mind is full of thoughts, feelings, and to-do lists. The repeat patterns help my brain to slow down and focus on the present.
Tonight was a triple dose of mandala meditation in the form of drafting, carving, and then printing! Om!
12/14: Baroque
“If it’s not Baroque, don’t fix it.”
-Cogworth, Beauty and the Beast
I enjoyed learning more about Baroque architecture and design for today's prompt. This carved design is adapated from the interior dome of the San Lorenzo, aka Royal Church of Saint Lawrence, located in Turin, Italy. The magnificent architecture was designed and built by Guarino Guarini during 1668–1687.
Once the carving was complete, I explored different ways to align the points to create secondary patterns, in addition to a bit of overlapping.
It's been fun seeing what the #CarveDecember prompts inspire me to carve and print each day.
Stay tuned for Week 3's #CarveDecember update. Until then, you can always hop over to Instagram or Facebook to see my daily creations.
