Powered by Fairy Dust: Doireann

This little garden fairy was made using several floral elements that I block-printed with my own hand-carved blocks during PrintInktober 2024. While many of these stamps were designed for other projects in mind, I am having so much fun reimagining them into these garden fairies!

Over the past year or so, I've been shift to using designer swatches from Fabmo, my local Creative Reuse Center. The block-printed elements are all silk samples from Fabmo, as is this beautiful linen printed with floral elements, which made for a lovely garden backdrop.

The background was outlined stitched with white Isacord thread before fusing on the fairy and outlining her with gold Superior Metallic thread. Her arms and hands were then stitched in, with one holding her fairy wand. I confess that I am still sorting out how best to add legs as I want her to appear floating in the air as if she were flying.

Wonderfil's Dazzle Rayon threads with metallic strands were used to stitch little asterisks to create the illusion of fairy dust, while a neutral taupe Perle cotton thread was used to add seed stitches to the background.

The linen print had one salvia flower spike that informed my stitching with a variegated Eleganza thread. Two stalks more were stitched to form a small cluster. This particular designer fabric had sevveral wooden beads that I managed to free-motion quilt around but later decided to remove from the final composition.

These projects encourage me to play with a variety of thread brands, fibers, and weights which really adds incredible stitched texture to each piece.

Meet Doireann, the second in my series of block-printed and stitched garden fairies. Doire is Irish for wood and often translated to mean "fruitful or fertile" which seemed especially approriate for a garden fairy! Here she sprinkling her fairy dust to help her garden thrive with beautiful blooms.

There are eight more of these block-printed garden fairies to incorporate into little art quilts, each powered by fairy dust!
